Green and Friendly
Hird Rail Services has an Environmental Policy Statement, to which the new IBJ facility has contributed greatly with increased efficiencies.
- Excavations from construction work has been screened and used elsewhere within the main depot to provide screening in a replanting scheme.
- Substructure of the building has been made of recycling crushed concrete railway sleepers.
- The new building has been constructed using 'freezer plant' grade insulated panels to increase efficiency of insulation and reduce energy use levels.
- Full-automated climate control has been installed to minimize energy wastage.
- Photovoltaic (PV) cells are being installed on the large surface area of the roof of the building. This will contribute to the energy supply for production and will lower the carbon emissions.
- The building has been constructed in a new 'cutting' to lower the visual impact of the surrounding area.
- As the building adjoins a public open green space, sensitive design of planting schemes and use of reclaimed railway bearers have created a 'green area'.
